Observance of Nagasaki bombing in Berkeley, California

Seventh Annual Bay Area Peace Lantern Ceremony Saturday, August 9 (the 63rd anniversary of the Nagasaki bombing), 6:30-9 p.m. at Aquatic Park, Berkeley.

Because various factors have delayed the organizing for this year's ceremony, it'll be more informal and simpler. But it's always a delightful event.

This year, we're asking all participants to take a bit more active role in making the event happen. This means the following:

Des Moines WILPF, with cosponsorship of AFSC, Catholic Peace Ministry, Des Moines Area Religious Council, Des Moines Area Ecumenical Peace Committee, Iowa Peace Network and Stop the Arms Race*Political Action Committee, held our annual Hiroshima/Nagasaki observance at the Japanese Bell on the capitol grounds on Fri., Aug. 8 at 7:30 p.m.

Join us on the 63th anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan, as we stand for a Nuclear Free Future. We will hold posters, distribute information and have petitions to have August 6 declared Nuclear Disarmament Day (an initiative of Burlington, Vt., WILPF).

No More Hiroshimas/Nagasakis Commemoration

Join us for a program and vigil commemorating the 63rd Anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  Veterans for Peace will set up a mini-Arlington West beginning at 4 p.m.; Buddhist Peace Mediatation at 6 p.m.  Program begins at 6:30 p.m.

Speakers include David Miller, Network of Spiritual Progressives; Dave Patterson, Veterans for Peace; Carol Jahnkow, Peace Resource Center of San Diego; Poetry by Jim Moreno; Shakuhachi music by Bruce Jones.  Program will be followed by a Candlelight Procession along the Embarcadero.

A commemoration of the Victims of Nagasaki by the Greater Fall River Committee for Peace and justice

A simple memorial on the exact 63rd anniversary of the bombing of Nagasaki. There will be reading of eyewitness accounts and poetry by survivors. a discussion of the decision to drop the second atomic bomb in light of recent scholarship, songs, prayers and a procession to the river where we will float flowers down the Taunton River in remembrance of the victims.

Peace Lantern Ceremony at Lovers’ Point, Pacific Grove

Fourth annual Lovers’ Point Peace Lantern Ceremony will be

held on Saturday, August 9th, from 7 – 9 PM, sponsored by the

Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom and the

Monterey Peace and Justice Center.

This beautiful, moving tradition honors those who died and those

who survived [the Hibakusha] the atomic bombings in 1944 .

The ceremony also reaffirms our commitment to total abolition
